Questions about giving birth at a birthing center

You will be cared for by a trusted midwife during the birth. She will be there for you the entire time and will provide attentive support. The birth takes place in a familiar, personal atmosphere in a comfortable setting, allowing you to shape the experience according to your wishes. We have plenty of time for you and—unless complications arise—we will not intervene unnecessarily in the birthing process.
No—not usually. Our birthing center is a facility run exclusively by midwives. A second midwife will be called in for the birth of your child. We only consult a doctor or pediatrician in special cases or if complications arise.
Before you decide to give birth at a birthing center, you will be informed about all potential risks associated with giving birth outside a hospital during a detailed consultation. Continuous care throughout your pregnancy and expert support during childbirth help ensure the highest possible level of safety.
The most common reasons for a transfer are labor arrest or premature rupture of membranes without contractions. In the vast majority of cases, the transfer takes place calmly and in the patient’s own car. Should an urgent emergency transfer be necessary—which is extremely rare (see the Quag Perinatal Survey)—we can reach the Mother-Child Center (University Hospital) on the Lahnbergen within 10 minutes.
Of course, the midwife will accompany you during your transfer. She will only say goodbye after providing a detailed handover to the midwife at the Mother-Child Center. We have a very good working relationship with the local hospital.
The best pain relief during labor is having your midwife by your side the entire time.
To help manage pain, we offer homeopathic/anthroposophic remedies, non-pharmacological methods (baths, hot water bottles, massage), and, if necessary, an antispasmodic medication. However, if you require medication or an epidural, this would be a reason for transfer.
We perform stitches for perineal tears or cuts ourselves under local anesthesia. Only in cases of very complicated birth injuries will we need to transfer you to the hospital for the procedure.
You will usually go home after about 2 to 4 hours. If there are medical reasons, you will stay at the birthing center a little longer with a doctor’s note.
Birthing centers are recognized healthcare facilities. The costs of prenatal care and childbirth support are covered by all health insurance plans. You are only responsible for a copayment for the midwife’s extended on-call service.
